Odin: the dankest god part 2

Returning to the topic of the highest god, Odin. First I address why the Romans weren't entirely wrong when they compared him to Mercury/Hermes. Then I present my theory about how Odin learned the nine sacred songs called Galdra and why this is related to his role as the god of the runes. The dankest god, Odin, and esoteric theories go together like runes and galdra. I look at the origins of runes themselves and the usage of runes in conjunction with galdra and thus seek to solve the mystery of the runes and the god who first learned them on the world tree.

Ship of the Sun or Ship of the Dead? Stone Ships

Stone ship settings or Skeppssättning are amongst the most remarkable Viking age monuments in Scandinavia, but what were they for? They were built over a period of 2000 years from the Nordic bronze age until the end of the Viking age, mainly in grave fields but they weren’t just associated with burials and cremations as they were also used for a kind of meeting called a ‘Thing’. This video explains how the stone ships may relate first to a Bronze age cult of the sun in Gotland, and later to a Viking belief that the dead would need a vehicle for a journey to and from the underworld. The stone ship settings included in this film are Tjelvars grave in Gotland, Anundshög in Västmanland, Åsa domaresäte in Södermanland, Ängakåsen and Ale’s stones in Scania and the Jelling stone ship in Denmark.

Good Walls for Bad Neighbours: The Meaning of Asgard's Walls

Interpreting myth: Verses 25/26 in Vǫluspá refer to the same myth found in chapter 42 of the Prose Edda book Gylfaginning which tells the story of how a Jotunn in disguise deceived the gods to enter a deal in which he would build the walls of Asgard in exchange for the sun, moon and the hand in marriage of Freyja. This is one of the most misunderstood myths of Norse mythology so I have decided to explain it as best I can.

JIVE TALK: Were Vikings really diverse?

Tomorrow at 19:00 UK time you can tune in to Jive Talk where I will be speaking to one of the authors of the recent paper on Viking DNA. Sturla Ellingvåg is an economist and historian from Norway currently working at the roots of the Vikings at the Lundbeck Foundation Centre for Geogenetics at the University of Copenhagen.
Sturla recently collaborated on a genetic paper titled Population genomics of the Viking world. The findings of the paper have been reported on by a number of mainstream media worldwide, but the reports misrepresent the findings and Sturla has spoken out against this. Today we will hear more about what the paper actually shows about Viking diversity.
