Buy Me A Taco

You enjoy my work enough to buy me one whole taco. Or most of one, more likely, it'll go to most of a can of food for my dog. Either way. Thank you so very much.

As a bonus, you get not one but TWO whole votes for the poll to decide which of the stories that's not one of the main ones will get an update at the end of the month.

Buy Me Two Tacos!

Some people would buy booze. I buy tacos and canned goods for canine consumption. You join here? I'll be buying at least one of either a month!

As a super thank you. Have the next chapter of whatever I'm working on.

And lastly, not one, not two, but FIVE votes for the poll to decide which of the stories that's not one of the main ones will get an update at the end of the month.

Oh Wow...Okay, You Get Early Access

I try not to work on a week to week basis. I normally try (and sometimes fail) to keep a buffer and give myself some wriggle room for posting the next chapter.

For this? Not anymore. You have access to everything that's ready to be posted. At least four chapters ahead of anything that's publicly available.

And lastly, ten whole votes for the poll to decide which of the stories that's not one of the main ones will get an update at the end of the month.

Thank you for giving me your beer money.

For your decision to give me your beer money...erm...You have everything that's available previously.

And fifteen votes for the poll to decide which of the stories that's not one of the main ones will get an update at the end of the month.

Frankly, don't do this one unless you wanna throw more money at me for some reason.

Why would you give me this much?

Literally the same thing as before. Except for the poll at the end of the month, you get to put in the most votes out of any tier. In the truest spirit of Capitalism, you get twenty votes if you choose this one.

Frankly, don't do this tier, I'll feel guilty. Seriously, only if you don't have something better to do with your cash. I put this one here purely to satisfy my OCD because I had this mental image of like, 'what's beer money anyways?' and the thing that came to mind was a twenty dollar bill. So yeah.

Stick to an earlier tier. Unless you REALLY want them twenty votes.

Rage Against The Dark Ch 13

Good afternoon folks! Chapter hot off the press as it were. Hope you enjoy it.
Drop me a comment and lemme know!
=][=
I used telekinesis to slam down a bulkhead I’d cut out into the large hallway, immediately creating a chest high piece of cover that my boys exploited, allowing them to ignore the majority of the fire that the droids were throwing at us. Boom Box got unlucky and a blaster bolt took him on the shoulder, twisting him around and dropping him to the deck.
I stood shoulder to shoulder with my boys, melting droid heads with single shots from my Hellgun as Aegis dragged Boom Box back, getting him to her sister, who used magic and the Force to heal him.
A squad of super battle droids turned the corner at the next intersession. I mentally activated my helmet’s comm unit via my HUD. “Charlotte, take my spot in the line.”
Not waiting for her reply I dropped my Hellgun, its cable retracting into the backpack power supply assembly, drew my bolt pistol in my left hand and called my blue lightsaber into my right, then with the Force augmenting my movements I dashed forward, felling two SBDs with three shots in the two seconds it took me to cross the forty meters separating us. After that, swift, precise cuts with the lightsaber saw the other eight cut into pieces.
I ducked back around the corner, cut out another bulkhead and telekinetically moved it to create Fort Rylanor, fifteenth of its name. I switched back to my Hellgun and poured ruinous blue light upon the next batch of battle droids in my way as the three squads of clones and my girls abandoned Fort Rylanor the fourteenth and caught up to me.
The battle to take the Malevolence had been ongoing for the better part of an hour. With Grievous gone, we had to assume he’d left orders to scuttle the ship.
Anakin wasn’t about to have that, and the moment Obi-Wan arrived with the Battlegroup, Anakin had ordered the 501st to board and take over the ship.
Much to Obi-Wan’s consternation.
Which served me just fine, as it turned out, the Malevolence was too big for my Stamp to be able to claim it just by stamping the hull. I’d claimed a section of the hull, but if I wanted to claim the ship itself, I’d need to Stamp its reactor, hyperspace engine core, and its droid brain.
The scuttling of any of those systems would delay my stamping until they were repaired. And with Papa Palps Probably and Properly Panicking as he Pondered Pompously, I’d likely have a very limited window of opportunity to stamp the ship before any shenanigans were made to happen.
Which led to my current activities.
The moment we’d secured a foothold in the Malevolence, I’d ordered Rex to give me a platoon to break past the droid front lines, our objective was to take over engineering to prevent the Separatists scuttling the ship, or worse, overloaded the reactor, and hold it until Anakin, Rex, and the 501st could catch up.
Obi-Wan had been livid when he’d found out, but by that time I had already pierced through the Droid lines and said breach had been closed behind me.
Anakin had just laughed.
I now had a full quarter of Torrent Company with me, a layout of the ship provided by R2D2, and the type of urgency only greed can provide.
The Battle Droids were honestly doing their best, but they were disorganized. Going by what I heard on the officers’ comms circuit, the droids were fighting less like a large cohesive force, and more like isolated groups that the clones could destroy piecemeal, our ‘line’ was advancing steadily but slowly, having to clear each room and hallway. Fully taking the Malevolence looked to be a long, grueling, and bloody affair.
It was the work of twenty more minutes to arrive at Engineering. The only reason it took that little time was that the area we’d breached was close to the middle of the ship, that had still necessitated a fast and reckless advance through three kilometers of enemy held ground.
This feat cost me three of my boys. Ribs, Ankles, and Graviton, I’d ordered the bodies stripped of all equipment we could carry and had stashed their bodies in maintenance tunnels where they would hopefully not be desecrated before I could retrieve them. The only ones who hadn’t taken a blaster bolt at one point during the operation were myself, my girls, and Sergeant Slippery. But my decision to purchase two healers…well, okay, one healer and Aegis’ plea to also purchase her sister had proven the wisdom in always bringing a healer.
Securing Engineering was not difficult, most of the droids present were maintenance models, not battle droids. I did have to leave the fortification and defense to the clones while Charlotte and I worked at disabling the many explosive charges that the maintenance droids had been setting up, something which may well have proven impossible without the Science and Engineering Talents boosting my understanding of the many blueprints and other technical knowledge shoved into my neural implants.
After that it was all over but for the shooting, as the hyperdrive core could not be overloaded for a detonation without a massive spike from the ship’s reactor, which I now controlled. That said, as I looked at the genuine marvel of engineering and ship building that was this oversized piece of scrap metal and the fact that the reactor itself was largely undamaged by the destruction of the ship’s main armament…
“Girls, I have an idea.” I said as I looked over the design specs for the reactor as well as the Ion Casters, which were apparently called Ion Pulse Cannons which…I liked my name better, so from now on they were Ion Casters.
“Is it a good idea?” Aegis asked.
“Nope.” I said. “But we’re doing it anyways. Aegis, Iris, with me. Charlotte, Sussurro, stay here and help the boys hold this location, it is paramount we don’t lose control of engineering.”
“What will you be doing, sir?” Slippery asked, by the feeling in the Force, voicing the question that was burning within the whole platoon.
My helmet hid my bloodthirsty grin as I began rerouting power. “I’m gonna go take care of the droids.”
“Very well sir.” Slippery said, and that was that.
The sheer level of trust the clones had on me was heartening. As soon as I was done rerouting power, I pulled Iris and Aegis deeper into engineering. “Not much time to explain so answer my questions quickly and do what I say without questioning me.” I ordered. “Iris, can you turn us invisible?”
“Yes.” She said. “But after all the healing I’ve been doing, I’m rather low in mana. I can’t keep it up indefinitely, so we’d have to do it in bursts. It’ll also hide us from each other, as, well…we’ll be invisible.”
I grunted as I got out a couple lengths of rope from my backpack and tied it around their waists, then to my own. “Good enough. Aegis, keep an eye and ear out for your sister. Iris, whenever you or your sister detect an enemy, turn us invisible. We’ll only engage enemy units if we absolutely have to. Understood?”
“Yes sir.” Aegis said, standing up straighter. Iris merely nodded.
With that, I set a nav-point in our helmets’ HUDs and began walking, pulling them in the direction of one of the doors leading to and from Engineering. I felt Iris’ spell take hold a moment before I opened the gate leading out of engineering, her spell actually made it so I couldn’t see my own body, I could see the inside of my helmet without a problem, but placing my hand in front of my face, I couldn’t see it.
The reason for the spell became apparent as a few dozen B-1 battle droids came into view, milling around at mid-range from the huge metal doors.
+Hey, who opened the door?+ One of them asked in their high-pitched modulated voice.
+I didn’t.+ Came the immediate answer from another one as I had to crush my instinct to draw one of my guns and my lightsaber and jump into the fray.
+Of course you didn’t, you were standing right here.+ Chastised another.
After a lengthy silence, one of them managed to work all the way through their logic routines. +Should we move forward?+
+We should ask command.+ Said one with a red strip painted on its face and red accents on its chassis.
+Roger roger.+
That one ‘Roger roger’ set off a chain reaction.
Not daring to use my communicator, I walked forward, pulling on the ropes until I was certain the girls were past the door, then closed it.
This, of course, did not go unnoticed.
+Oh! The door is closing!+ One of them astutely said…well, astutely for a B-1 battle droid.
+What should we do?+ Asked the one that proposed moving into engineering earlier.
+I’ll ask command.+ Red-Stripe insisted.
+Roger roger.+
+Roger roger.+
+Roger roger.+
+Roger roger.+
Red-Stripe waited for the rogers to end before speaking. +Command. This is B-1-C98-V259. The doors to engineering are closed…Yes they are closed…yes…yes…But you said to inform you of any changes…Yes they are closed…Weird, command hung up.+
Leaving the droids behind to wallow in their confusion and their ‘roger roger’s, I let Iris take the lead, as she was the one that knew how long she could keep the invisibility going. Our trek paradoxically felt much longer than the running firefight to Engineering, but was actually significantly faster, even including the fact that we had to quite often stop at a corner and wait for Iris to rest enough to cast the invisibility spell again.
The assault to take Engineering took an hour and twenty minutes, the trek to the Ion Casters, a distance that was almost one and a half times as far, took less than half the time. Seriously, perfect invisibility was broken, I needed to figure out a way to automate it. Once we arrived, what we found was a dark, cavernous chamber intermittently illuminated by flickering lights and sparks.
The Ion Casters were largely abandoned, it was easy to see why, the large complex that was their control interface was damaged enough that any kind of serious repair to its systems would require time spent at a yard, perhaps the very yard where the ship was made, seeing as to, looking around, I saw a lot of custom parts rather than off-the-shelf components. This thing was likely as chock-full of ‘proprietary’ parts as whatever megacorporation that built it could get away with. Something that was going to bite me in the ass whenever I got around to repairing my newest big toy.
“Okay Iris, drop the spell.” I said, grabbing one of my lightsabers.
My body suddenly became visible to me, and the half-dozen meandering droids that were puttering around fixing what they could stopped and turned to look at us.
I thumbed the activation button, and a blood-red blade illuminated the gloom.
+Ooooh noooooo.+ One of the B-1’s said, its shoulders hunching in dismay an instant before the red lightsaber, humming in seeming bloodthirsty glee as it soared through the air, spinning like a buzz saw made of plasma, split it vertically in two.
I took three more droids down in half as many seconds, Iris drawing her vibro-longsword and cutting down the other two with well-practiced, elegant, and somewhat stiff movements. I made a note to go over the sword-forms she learned and seeing what could be improved.
“What now?” Iris asked, removing her helmet and wiping her sweat-covered face with a handkerchief. Once that was done, she put the helmet back on without a word of complaint, even though I could feel her annoyance at using the armor through the Force.
I made a note to check her armor’s ventilation system, it clearly needed fine-tuning to account for the effort of high magic use.
“Now we take control of the ship.” I said with a grin and looked around. A few minutes later, I’d found the access panel to the large cable that had the power I’d rerouted from Engineering, and a few minutes after that, through copious use of the Force, I’d tore it out of the deck as well as various pieces of the deck and bulkhead, and jury rigged the whole mess to connect to the Ion Caster’s capacitors, bypassing the big melted parts that usually served that function.
The closest one that wasn’t a melted ruin, anyway.
As that charged, I dove into the guts of the Ion Caster and demolished much of it in search of wiring and whatever parts ‘felt’ right, going by instinct more than keeping any particular design in mind in order to best leverage Engineering Talent.
In very little time, I’d rigged what remained of one of the Ion Caster’s two remaining capacitors into an EMP bomb that would either explode catastrophically and vent the entire deck into the void of space. Or cause a ship-wide ‘droid popper’ effect to get rid of all the B-1’s, short out and damage all B-2s, and hopefully burn out the shield modules of any Droidekas.
“Oh yeah.” I said as an angry hum began to build up. “There is no way whatsoever this will backfire.”
“Should…we be standing so close to it?” Aegis asked, Iris sitting next to her sister, hugging her legs to her chest.
“Nope.” I said, turned around, and sprinted out, Iris yelping as I scooped her up and tossed her over my shoulder as I ran. “We shouldn’t!”
Aegis took a few moments but she started running after me.
“I can run by myself.” Iris huffed, then yelped again as I slapped a palm onto her rear hard enough for her to feel it past the armored pants.
“This is more fun!” I said with a cackle and slapped her other buttock for good measure.
“Rylanor!” Iris huffed, beating her tiny fist against my backpack. “You should wait until we’re in the bedroom to do that! It’s indecent!”
“Noted.” I said and delivered a third smack as I switched my comms unit to broadcasting to all channels. “Attention, attention, in about…I dunno, ten? Maybe twenty seconds, there will either be a catastrophic explosion, or most of the droids will short out. So, be ready for that. Do not lean against a bulkhead, crouch, or lie down on the deck.”
[Rylanor what did you do!?] Obi-Wan demanded as Anakin cackled.
“Something to make my Master proud.” I said with a cackle of my own and stopped broadcasting.
[Padawan, you will explain yourself this instant!] Obi-Wan’s voice growled through my comms a moment before there was a thunderous boom, the ship shuddered and groaned like a man in agony, and a cascading electric wave suddenly enveloped every surface as it passed through the ship and scrambled all communications, the electric wave passing me by as the insulation on my boots kept it from affecting me.
I stumbled to a stop, Aegis coming to a stop beside me as we listened for any movement, for the hiss of the comms to subside after the EMP scrambled them. The smell of ozone so strong it penetrated through my helmet’s filters.
Through the Force, I felt a great trepidation that swiftly changed to surprise, then to elation, the contagious emotion resonating through the Force so strongly that it raised my spirits. I took a moment to bask in the relief and triumph of the Clones.
My moment of combined personal and vicarious victory and relief was cut short as Iris asked. “C-Can you put me down now?”
This time when I smacked her bottom, she moaned.
=][=
“That was horribly reckless!” Obi-Wan thundered as he paced back and forth at our foothold-turned-HQ in the Malevolence. I stood at a lazy approximation of attention in front of him, my helmet clipped to my belt.
There was still some fighting going on, but the only droids to survive my little trick were B-2s and a few Droideka, which meant that, for once, it was the Separatist forces that were outnumbered several hundred to one.
“Hey, it worked.” Anakin defended me happily.
“That isn’t the point!” Obi-Wan groaned.
“I agree with Anakin. It worked out, so what’s the problem?” I asked.
“You could have blown up the ship with all of us in it!” Obi-Wan yelled.
“Nah, the explosion would have happened way far away from our forces.” I said, waving a hand dismissively. “At worst we’d have to deal with decompression…probably.”
“Probably isn’t good enough, Rylanor!” Obi-Wan insisted.
“I took a calculated risk.” I insisted. “And it worked out! Speaking of calculation though, where’s Asami?”
Obi-Wan gave me a gimlet stare, then he turned it to Anakin, then he returned it to me. “My Padawan is with Cody, getting some more experience fighting droids. I told her she could take her time, but she insisted.”
“Nnnneat.” I said. “Anyways, if you need me for anything, I’ll be dismantling droids!”
I started to walk away, only to be yanked back by my collar.
“No you don’t.” Anakin said. “You still need to sit through my lecture.”
“Aw come on!” I whined. “It worked!”
“You did not clear your plan to strike deep into enemy territory with me.” Anakin said, crossing his arms. “And you certainly didn’t ask for my opinion about your idea of ditching the men to turn the ship into a droid popper.”
I said the first thing that came to mind. “Opportunity cost. Had I stopped to ask, the chance would have been lost.”
Anakin hummed. “No, it would not have. You decided that it was best to ask for forgiveness than permission.”
“I thought that was our modus operandi.” I shot back. “It worked when we went to rescue Master Plo.”
Anakin stared at me for a long time, his shield was fairly good, but the Force nonetheless quivered with the power of the gears turning in his head, ultimately he sighed. “Look, it worked out, and you saved the lives of our men, that’s what matters most. But next time, whenever you have some crazy half-cocked plan that might turn the battle around, run it by me first. Okay?”
“What if there isn’t time and telling you about it would mean I lost the opportunity?” I asked.
He narrowed his eyes at me. “Is that what happened today?”
I met his stare for as long as I could before looking away and mumbled. “No.”
“You’re smart, Rylanor.” Anakin said. “You’re not like most Jedi, and that’s a good thing. I meant it when I said that you are the exact kind of Jedi we need if we want to win this war. That hasn’t changed. There is a razor-thin difference between recklessness and boldness. Your plant to win us the battle at Christophsis, and to disable this ship? Those were bold. What you did in breaking through enemy lines, cut off from support, assistance, backup, and no possibility of extraction? That was reckless. It worked, but if it hadn’t, you would have eventually been overwhelmed, overrun, and killed, long before anyone could have reached you to offer assistance. So, again, the next time you have a crazy half-cocked plan that may win the battle? Run it by me first. Understood?”
“Yes sir.” I mumbled, my face feeling hot. Which was bullshit, I wasn’t actually some kid, I had everything under control the entire time. There was no reason for me to feel embarrassment or shame.
Anakin slapped my armored shoulder. “No sulking. You did good, just gotta keep a few things in mind for the future.”
I grunted and sulkily muttred. “‘M not sulking.”
Anakin snorted. “Go have fun destroying droids. I’ll go get a head start on the flimsiwork.”
“Whopee.” I said with only thirty percent fake enthusiasm, and dashed off, putting my helmet back on and setting a nav-point for the nearest firefight. The sooner the ship was fully secured, the sooner I could get started on fixing my newest toy. I would probably turn this thing into a mothership, tear out those Ion Casters and replace them with fighter bays, get rid of at least eighty percent of the turbo-lasers and replace those with manufacturing bays…with a few dedicated support ships, I could turn the Malevolence into the core of a self-sustaining fleet that could operate deep behind enemy lines and even manufacture new starfighters.
Oh! I could use it to create the first Hummingbird carrier!
I salivated at all the possibilities as I reached the first firefight I could and started turning droids into scrap metal.
=][=
Repairing the Malevolence to the point that it was sail-worthy was long, arduous, and thankless work. Poots was instrumental in it, taking care of the most sensitive components, each and every single one of which were custom proprietary parts. This included several of the bolts and screws.
I had spent much of my time elbow-deep in the guts of various systems. With the intent of getting the ship repaired just enough to survive the trip to a friendly port where I could begin the modifications I wanted in earnest, a process that had taken the better part of four days, a whole Republic fleet arriving and securing the system against Separatist retaliation. Which suited me just fine. It would be nice to have an escort while I limped the Malevolence to a nearby ship yard.
I had been wrestling with a particularly stubborn bolt when I’d received a call from Anakin to meet him at one of the Malevolence’s launch bays.
Not having taken the time to clean up, and standing as I was covered in soot and grease-stained overalls, I should not have cut much of an intimidating figure.
Nonetheless, I managed.
“The hell do you mean you’re taking the Malevolence?” I snarled; the Force quivered with my rage to such an extent that even the non-Force sensitive flimsy-pusher could literally feel how close to death he just came.
The bug-eyed Rodian did his species’ version of paling in fright, but pushed forward, secure in the safety of his station. “B-By order of th-the Supreme Chancellor, this ship is to be taken t-to Kuat Drive Yards. It is far too valuable a prize to remain so close to the front lines of the conflict.”
I took that in, and my wrath found a new target. The reason why nobody in this galaxy could have nice things.
Palpatine.
“Rylanor.” Anakin said as he stepped between me and bug-fucker the alien, a clear warning in his tone. “I know you’ve been having a lot of fun fixing up the ship. But we were never going to get to keep it.”
I growled.
“Go cool off.” Anakin demanded. “Now.”
Not trusting myself to say another word without snapping the bug-eyed alien’s neck, which I suspected would make Anakin rather upset with me, I went to grab Poots to drag him back to the Resolute.
Palpatine would rue this day. I would make sure of it.

Rage Against The Dark Ch 12

Heyo, good...uhh...HUH!? I made it to the morning!?
Neat!
Honestly didn't think that would happen. Had some uh...some stuff happen. I was honestly fearing I'd have to beg forgiveness and post during the week.
Shit was bad for a bit is all. But we are past, and I have chapter!
Hope you guys like!
=][=
“Man that was a crazy fight.” I said as I lazily piloted through the mostly less empty than usual vacuum of space. “Glad that that’s over with.”
There was a long moment of silence on the communicator before Anakin got on. [Rylanor, what are you on about?]
“I’m trying to kickstart the time skip.” I explained.
[…I’m almost afraid to ask. Time skip?]
“You know, where the scene transitions and we get to the next important bit in the great saga of the Clone Wars as we continue to mightily defend the Republic from the consequences of its own inadequacies. I do this, because I’m bloody bored! All I have to see out the viewport is variously colored space dust!”
[No propaganda over the communicator.] Anakin said absently, making me scoff, calling out the Republic on its bullshit wasn’t propaganda! [And since we’re flying through a nebula to get into position for a battle, shouldn’t your time skip be taking us straight to the fight?]
“I mean, that sounds like work.” I said, starting to rotate my Hummingbird around its Z axis, granting me a rotating three-hundred-and-sixty degree view of Shadow Squadron, as well as the (relatively) soup-thick nebula we traveled through, thanks to the ship’s design and the thrusters being slaved to individual droid-brains, each of which were slaved to a singular droid-brain that coordinated them, I lost no ‘forward’ acceleration thanks to my tomfoolery. “And I’m all about skipping work.”
[Diligent hard work is an investment that always pays off.] Master Plo Koon said sagely. [While taking proper rest in order to recuperate is imperative, one should strive to never neglect one’s duties. Such is beneath each of us as Sapient beings.]
“Yes Master Ploooooo.” I droned, doing my absolute best to sound like a brat at a classroom.
[It is good that you understand.] Master Plo Koon said, an immovable wall of serenity from which my sarcasm bounced helplessly off of. [Perhaps with maturity you will come to realize the joy of a duty well accomplished.]
“Hey I’m perfectly mature!” I said, adding a rotation along the ship’s X axis, closing my eyes and using the Force to maintain my heading as the world outside my viewport became a dizzying blur. “Wheeeeeeee!”
Anakin sighed. [Rylanor, stop playing around.]
“I’m not playing around.” I shot back as I added a Z-axis rotation, turning what I was doing into what looked like an uncontrolled tumble that nonetheless moved in a ‘straight’ line. “I’m experimentally utilizing non-destructive testing to examine the tolerances of the flight mechanism for my personal edification.”
[I don’t care what you call your playing around. You will stop doing it.] Anakin the spoilsport said.
“Okay fiiiiiiiine.” I answered, leveling out my flying.
[And don’t you snip back at me.]
I straightened up. “My utmost apologies Master Skywalker, it was not my intention to bring embarrassment and dishonor to you and to the hallowed institution of the Jedi Order through my thoughtless actions. I shall forthwith display only the utmost respect and decorum on our communications and interactions so as to never again cause such harm upon your person and the Order.”
[On second thought.] Anakin said, sounding queasy. [Continue snipping at me. It’s much better than whatever that was.]
“Whatever you say, Skyboss.” I said, beginning a lazy circuit around the squadron and making pew pew noises at imaginary enemy spacecraft.
[Quite the spirited Padawan you ended up with, Knight Skywalker.] Plo Koon said, no hint of anything other than serenity in his voice, which was a feat as his ship all but radiated amusement into the Force. Amusement reflected in the rest of Shadow Squadron, even if they kept their amusement to themselves.
Anakin grumbled.
I flew in silence for a little while before noticing something. “Shadow Five you are starting to drift out of formation, adjust six degrees port.”
The bomber quickly shifted and returned to formation. Tag opened communications. [Sorry Commander, this soup is thick.]
“I know the space dust can’t hurt you, but you wouldn’t want to be late to the party.” I said with a snort.
[It’s more difficult than I thought it would be.] Charlotte commented as she flew in a boring straight line, impeccably in formation. [The scanners are returning nothing but ghosts and echoes. Even thermals are struggling thanks to pockets of higher density, hotter gases.]
[This is old-fashioned flying.] Anakin said, sounding smug. [You have to feel your way through to stay on course.]
[Is that what we’ve been doing?] Asked Flyby. [I’ve just been staring nonstop at the thrusters in front of me and following that.]
“That’s a good a way as any.” I said, doing an aileron roll. “Just don’t follow mine, you’ll get queasy.”
[I don’t need to follow your thrusters Commander, I always know exactly where I’m going.] Broadside said cockily.
I maneuvered my ship to ‘hover upside down’ over his bomber. “Oh? Where would that be?”
[I’m gonna blow up that battleship!] He stated and the Force thrummed with his declaration.
[A clear path if ever there was one.] Plo Koon agreed.
The pilots continued to banter for a while, the Force trembling with their nervous energy and rock-solid readiness, when suddenly I felt a shadow looming in front of me. It wasn’t darkness, not exactly. The Dark Side was a part of it, as it was a part of all things. It wasn’t evil, merely uncaring and vast. Its sheer bulk causing something akin to a bow-wave in the Force.
“Hey, Skyboss.”
[Yeah?]
“There wouldn’t happen to be any spaceman stories about dragons eating ships that get lost in this nebula, would there?”
[No, why do you ask?]
“Just a feeling.” I said as the Force nagged more insistently. “A Force feeling.”
[Not that I know of. It’s just an old smuggler’s route I heard about back in Tatooine. They call it Balmorra Run.] The Force spiked between my eyes in warning as he said that.
[Balmorra Run!?] Plo Koon snarled in dismay. [Skywalker, listen to me! We need to turn around!]
[Contact.] Charlotte reported with a tense false calm. [It’s massive.]
[We aren’t turning around.] Anakin stated. [If we do, we doom the medical station and every clone in it.]
[Another contact.] Charlotte said, her voice slightly more tense as my scanners picked up their first. [This one is an order of magnitude more massive.]
[Skywalker!] Master Plo Koon snapped. [Balmorra’s the nesting ground of the giant neebray mantas!]
The Force screamed.
“Evade! Evade! Evade!” I snapped, juking my ship ‘down,’ but since I was still flying ‘upside down’ to the rest of the squadron, that movement took me ‘above’ them as the clone pilots and Charlotte all instinctively followed my order. “Keep within sight of each other!”
[Rylanor wha—?] Anakin cut off with a growl as a gigantic bulbous head with six eyes and a huge maw of sharply pointed tree-trunk thick teeth parted the nebula directly in the path that the squadron had been flying in. Thanks to the fact that the clones had scattered and Anakin’s and Plo’s Jedi reflexes nobody crashed straight into it, and only the Jedi evaded it without a comfortable margin of error.
The squadron broke into a pocket of ‘clear’ space, though, glancing ‘down’ it wasn’t a pocket so much as a large cylinder, an eye of the storm caused by several dozen enormous creatures that had the head of an angler fish mashed onto the body of a fat flying fish with the fappy bits of a majestic sea flap flap.
But in space.
[Do not shoot or they’ll panic!] Plo Koon ordered as the squadron slipped between the few hundred meters that the creatures kept between each other.
Which, considering how big space was and the fact that they were so large that some of their bits brushed against each other as they ‘swam’ through the nebula, they were basically packed in like space tuna.
[There are too many of them!] Shadow two said, diving ‘beneath’ the maw of a very surprised space creature that flinched at the near collision. Unfortunately, he came out of that near full-on crash with a minor impact, his left engine trailing smoke and venting plasma into the nebula. [I’m hit! I’m hit! My stabilizer’s out!]
The bomber started to shake like a thing alive as I dove for it.
[Pull it together Matchstick!] Anakin ordered.
[I got it…I got it.] Matchstick said in the tone of a man standing on razor thin, crumbling foothold.
I launched the tow cable, sticking it to the top of the bomber, before tightening it and landing on the ship. “Gotcha! Shadow two, cut acceleration. Charlotte, mate to the other side and help me tow him!”
[On it.]
[Rylanor?] Anakin asked.
“I got him, Skyboss.” I said. “Between Charlotte and I we should be able to tow him without falling behind.”
[Don’t mess it up Padawan.] Anakin said after a few moments of silence.
Thanks to my Bond with Charlotte, she was able to anticipate my movements, the two of us dragging the no longer smoking bomber with us as we maneuvered around the giant aliens, the density of giant space creatures thinning as we left their nesting…well, it’s not really ground but…
[We’re through.] Anakin announced as we exited the nebula.
“Okay cool!” I said, cutting my acceleration, the rest of the squadron quickly gaining distance as we drifted, traveling at several kilometers a second.
[Rylanor?] Asked Anakin as Plo Koon’s fighter turned around and started hovering.
“Need to patch up Matchstick’s ship.” I said, as I nabbed the repair kit from the small cubbyhole with supplies. “I need to assess the damage, it might be nothing or he may be a dead man flying. I don’t want to risk starting the mission down one bomber.”
[Shadow, cut acceleration. Rylanor, get it done.]
“Aye aye Skyboss.” I said, opening the hatch. I’d designed the Hummingbird to deploy with an internal vacuum. That way, if it was breached, I’d not have to deal with explosive decompression on top of a hull breach. I’d had Poots modify my armor’s life support functions to mate seamlessly with the fighter’s, and unlike other designs I’d based mine on, I didn’t take that as an excuse to skimp on comfort. A pilot fighting discomfort was one who would tire more quickly and thus could not fight as long.
I crawled out of the fighter, and drifted hand over hand down to the bomber, repair kit floating behind me tied to my waist.
After a few minutes of diagnosis, I saw that the stabilizer was indeed out, but the real issue was that the impact had punctured a coolant pipe, that was what had smoked, the coolant the Y-Wing used was flammable, it had burned through the entire reservoir. The moment this engine was pushed, it would not be long before it overheated and went up like a firecracker, taking the rest of the bomber with it.
It was the work of a few minutes to weld a patch, test the weld, syphon some coolant from my and Charlotte’s Hummingbird, refill the Y-Wing, and test the weld again, now under pressure.
With all taken care of, I jumped back to my ship, had a butt puckering moment of terror as I missed the handhold. Charlotte appeared there, having already decoupled from the Y-Wing, and allowed me to use her fighter as a platform to push off of to drift to mine.
A short time after that, we were back in formation. This time I didn’t drift around for the funsies, as my scanners returned the medical station, a convoy of medical transports traveling away from it at maximum sustainable acceleration, which meant things would be getting interesting pretty soon.
The Force showed it had a sense of humor as, just having thought that, I received an alarm about a massive object exiting hyperspace at the edge of the system.
[Contact.] Matchstick said, his voice tight. [Exiting hyperspace. It’s the Malevolence.]
[Alright Shadow, you know the drill.] Anakin said as he turned his ship and broadcast an intercept course to the rest of the squadron. [Let’s go turn that ship into a scrap heap.]
I grinned as the comms lit up with whoops and jubilation as the squadron turned like a single organism in the direction of the huge ship.
Grievous turned out to be a better tactician than Tarkin would ever be, as the first thing he seemingly did the moment his ship picked up our squadron, was deploy fighters. Dozens of the goddamn things.
I watched the distance between my squadron and the enemy fighters shrink with intent, my thumb hovering over my firing controls.
The Malevolence turned ponderously, lining up its starboard broadside in the direction of the station, and firing off a circular pulse of ionizing radiation that engulfed the fleeing ships and left them as drifting hulks, swiftly following up with an utterly ridiculous barrage of Turbo Laser fire.
Sacred hell, the energy readings on that ion pulse. A Y-Wing sat at just under sixty-five metric tons, it was heavily shielded and armored, not quite the ‘flying fortress’ idea of a bomber, but it was built to take a hit and dish it back twice as hard.
It also had just about the absolute minimum shielding necessary for an organic to survive the experience of traveling through that energy blast. And even then, they’d be left floating in space and there was a non-zero chance it would fry the life support systems of standard Clone Pilot armor.
(Un?)Fortunately, I didn’t have much more time to ponder as the Separatist fighter wing came within range of my heavy guns, I accelerated, pushing past Shadow Squadron, Charlotte and Plo Koon hot on my heels. “Engaging.”
The first three shots I took destroyed three vulture droids from beyond the range at which they could retaliate, Charlotte’s own shots took down five more before they finished working through their self-preservation routines and began dodging.
Fortunately for us, we’d studied their standard evasion pattern, so we were able to wipe out a full dozen Vulture droids before they came in range of the smaller guns in our arsenal and the guns in theirs. Then the dog fight began, as the Vultures were so outclassed it wasn’t even funny.
A vulture’s predatory shape was aerodynamic; it was an air superiority fighter that had been adapted to do battle in space.
Against a Jedi Master, and two ships that could turn on a dime while, bring the totality of their considerable firepower into any facing while accelerating in any direction? By the time they drew a bead on Charlotte an I, we were already four fighters ahead and they were dead.
Out of the dozens of enemy fighters that were launched, few survived long enough to be brought down by the defensive fire from the Y-Wing’s gunners.
Nonetheless, the pace at which we fought was not one we could sustain indefinitely, as my deflector shields were steadily decreasing from the sheer volume of fire being deployed.
In words as ancient as industrialized warfare, quantity is a quality all of its own.
Electromagnetic readings redlined.
I looked at the Malevolence, the ship so immense that I could see it with my naked eye even kilometers out. In the time we had been closing, it had maneuvered its bulk to turn its broadside to us.
“Ion caster preparing to fire!” I snapped, accelerating ‘forward’ and rising above the plane that Shadow Squadron was operating in. I turned the Hummingbird around and continued to shoot down vultures as I maintained my acceleration and direction. “Prepare—!”
The Ion Caster fired.
“Shit!”
[Make towards the edge of the ray!] Anakin snapped, ‘rising’ in the same direction I was already moving as the wall of electromagnetic radiation shot towards us, swallowing entire wings of Vulture droids whole and leaving behind expensive scrap metal. [Give it everything you’ve got!]
Every pilot redlined their craft, cresting the bow wave of the ion ray and continuing our course toward the Malevolence.
[Shadow Squadron, check in.] Anakin said, his voice grim.
His query was answered by Charlotte. [Shadows nine and eleven were caught in the ray. As were the entirety of the vultures the Malevolence deployed.]
Anakin grunted. [Mark their locations and headings for later retrieval.]
The assumption that they would succeed served to swell Shadow’s morale at their brother’s perceived failure.
The actual strafing run on the Malevolence itself was somewhat underwhelming. The ship was large enough and thus had engines that made it supremely fast…for a ship of its size. It was not fast enough to get away from us, its Point Defense was clustered to repel a direct assault on the bridge, so our corridor of attack resulted in it being incapable of bringing more than a quarter of its strength to bear, and it was far too slow and ponderous to turn quickly enough to make a difference.
And Grievous had managed to prove himself a worse tactician than even Tarkin, after having wiped out his own massive fighter wing, admittedly we had been tearing through them quite easily. But he could have still used them to be the hammer to his ship’s anvil by forcing us into a different avenue of approach.
With Charlotte, Plo Koon, and I flying forward and damaging, chaffing, and destroying point defense cannons, the bombers had a nearly unobstructed line of attack to the Ion Caster. All ten Y-Wings were able to fire off the entirety of their payload, something to which Charlotte and I contributed by launching four proton torpedoes into the pileup at the Ion Caster.
One hundred and eight proton torpedoes proved to be too much for the ‘superweapon.’ The Malevolence lit up like a Life Day tree on my instruments as it was wracked by internal explosions, the lights I could see on the ship flickered off and on before dimming completely, and one of those enormous Ion Casters outright detached from the rest of the ship, and with one last mighty plume of plasma and molten metal, the Malevolence’s reactor died, leaving the huge hulk drifting, dead in space.
Shadow whooped and hollered on the comms and I found myself joining them with a savage grin splitting my face.
[Shadow! Form up on me!] Anakin demanded as he pulled his Y-Wing into a new heading. [We are going to reduce that bridge to a scrap heap! Rylanor, you, Charlotte, and Master Plo Koon move ahead of us! Weapons free!]
“Hell yeah!” I roared as I felt Charlotte form up behind me, opening fire with every weapon the instant the Malevolence’s elevated bridge came into view.
I may not understand this Galaxy’s shipwrights’ obsession with an elevated, and thus vulnerable bridge. But I certainly took advantage of it as my and Charlotte’s combined barrage shattered the transparasteel viewports of the Malevolence, the explosive decompression sucking dozens of flailing B-1 battledroids into the cold void.
I flew up to the bridge, until my viewport was meters away from the mangled ruin that used to be bridge’s viewports, and shone a light into it. Unfortunately, General Grievous was not hanging on for dear life as hurricane force winds attempted to suck him into the void. Which…all things considered probably wouldn’t have happened anyways. Though the Force Field that was supposed to come on to keep pressure and atmosphere in didn’t activate, the bulkhead leading to the rest of the ship had, meaning if he’d been on the bridge he’d just have been forced to either float or more likely stab his metal feet into the deck to keep himself in place.
I shook my head to get it back in the game. “Shoot the…dunno what the hell you call it! The neck! Shoot the neck!”
I followed my instruction by opening fire with everything in my ship at the bridge tower (That’s what it’s called!), but its armor was so thick that even the P-12 Heavy Blaster Cannons could do little else than scorch it. We’d need the torpedoes we’d expended on the Ion Casters to get through it.
[This isn’t working.] Charlotte said, stating the obvious. [Let’s spread out, keep watch on the hangars.]
“Right!” I said with a snarl and flew off in search of wherever the hell the hangars might be. Cresting the side of the ship only to see a big muscle-car looking shuttle flying off. “Contact! Contact! I’m in pursuit!”
I redlined all four engines and began to close the distance, sending a fusillade of blaster bolts at the enemy shuttle. It immediately put its deflector shields to double back and maintained its acceleration as it performed erratic evasive maneuvers.
Maneuvers that didn’t help it fuck all as the Force angrily told me where he was going to dodge before he himself knew it. I cracked through his shields, blaster bolts from my ship boiling kilograms of armor off his shuttle, the two heavy blaster bolts that would cripple the ship and allow me to destroy it at leisure were meters out when the shuttle elongated, then disappeared into the black between stars.
“Blast!” I snarled. “Stupid piece of worthless rusted scrap metal bonded to bantha poodo!”
I swallowed the rest of my curses as I brought my ship to a halt, my blood singing in my veins as I itched for a kill denied.
[I take it he got away.] Anakin said sarcastically.
I took a deep breath ready to snap at him, then let it out slowly because it wasn’t his fault that the slippery pile of scrap metal got away. “Yeah, yeah he did.”
[He’s a slippery one.] Anakin said. [We achieved the objective. You and Charlotte go pick up Shadows Nine and Eleven. We’ll meet up at the medical station.]
“Aye aye.” I said but pulled out a small drone I’d had Poots put together for me, slotted in my Stamp into it, designated the wreck of the Malevolence as its target, popped the hatch of my ship and sent it off into the black before sealing the hatch again and going off to pick up my men.
My boys in Shadow Eleven were very thankful when we got them to the station, their air had been running somewhat stale thanks to the damage their suits had taken.
My boys in Shadow Nine were dead.
The next time I was in the same star system as that cyborg menace, I was going to tear his heart out and crush it to paste in front of him.
