“Senior Hens”

In contrast to conventional egg producers that cull hens after 2 years of forced maximum egg production, Pigeon River Farm hens are kept until natural death at around 5 years old. Your monthly Tier 1 subscription will be used to help offset our costs in feeding these “senior” hens that no longer lay enough eggs to pay for their feed.

“Senior Cows”

Much like the egg-laying hens in Tier 1, Pigeon River Farm Scottish Highland cows are kept until natural death on the Farm. As they age, these cows first become too old to nurse calves, and eventually they become too old to birth anymore calves. Your monthly Tier 2 subscription will be used to help offset our costs in feeding calves that are unable to nurse, and in feeding these “senior” cows.

In this episode, we talk about the joys of having farm dogs.  And about the dog's importance in the everyday operation of the farm.  It would be hard to imagine running a livestock operation without dogs.  We show the dogs working from dawn to dusk doing various tasks on the farm.

In this episode, we talk about vine crops. We have experience in growing Winter Squash for Organic Valley. We've learned a lot of things about Winter Squash, pickles, Summer Squash growing a variety on the farm commercially. The nutrients are critical to our health, but we should not forget that toxic chemicals can also be part of the soil that Non-Organic Squash is grown in.

Using a Typhoon H Drone to inspect the fencing in the winter when the snow is deep and harder to get to. Damage found needed to be fixed. It can then be gotten to using conventional equipment.

We raise “Superfood” nutrient-rich Raspberries in our season extension high-tunnel. The key is to let the Chickens do the work for you over the Winter. Just put ash from your wood stove or boiler and add some minerals and let the time of growing make it happen.
