INTERVIEW: Vanessa Beeley on Biden’s ‘ISIS Reboot’ in Syria

On the February 8, 2022 episode of Patrick Henningsen Show on TNT Radio, we spoke with independent journalist Vanessa Beeley in Damascus, to learn more about Washington’s recent commando raid in Idlib, Syria, where the US claim to have killed the latest ‘ISIS leader’. What is the status of ISIS in Syria, and will the US continue to use the terrorist confab as a cudgel to destabilize Syria and steal more of Syria’s oil?

Ukraine, Russia and the repercussions for Syria

The following are my notes for my interview on Syria TV with journalist, Elissar Moualla:

Are you concerned about international tensions. Do you see more political and security hardships ahead? Are you concerned about Europe?

International tensions have been a way of life for decades, of course with their origins in US, UK, Israeli allied agenda to secure global hegemony and to maintain a Unipolar world without economic trade or military competition. Europe should be concerned about Europe - Germany for example has de facto been occupied militarily by the US and UK since the end of WW2. The US alone still has an estimated 40 bases on German territory. Europe needs the Nordstream gas from Russia  and other resources from the Ukraine like coal. It is worth noting that the largest coal deposits are in the Donbas region. Effectively when it comes to Russia and a multipolar world Europe is instinctively heading East as is Syria and this is what the US fears above all else. The NATO occupation of Ukraine since 2014 when Obama introduced the neo-Nazi regime is to prevent the collaboration of Russia with the EU. It is also worth pointing out that the US enabled the escape of Ukrainian Nazis at the end of WW2 with this aim in mind - to use them against Russia in the future.

SInce occupying Ukraine in 2014, the NATO backed regime has been carrying out a genocide against the Russian speaking people of Donbass, killing an estimated 10,000 since the Odessa massacre engineered by the US alliance, just as they had done in 2011 in Syria.

NATO has reneged on the Minsk agreements which protected Russia against NATO expansion eastwards and NATO has refused to honour this agreement and to provide Russia with the necessary reassurances to avoid conflict. Russia has now responded and the world is in shock. Will this increase international tensions or reduce them? Only time will tell. I somehow doubt that NATO will come into direct confrontation with Russia, preferring to use their proxy forces they installed in Ukraine which include ISIS fighters drafted in from Syria. NATO has however been providing direct military aid and technology to the Ukrainians including the possibility of nuclear expertise and even potential bioweapon laboratories that are collaborating with the US Ministry of Defence.

Where are these countries heading politically speaking. How do you read what is happening and NATO?

I think that for some time some members of the EU have been trying to break away from NATO and to become more autonomous - this crisis in Ukraine is being used to seal NATO supremacy and to also prevent any EU break-away from the group.

NATO member states Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have triggered NATO Article 4 to launch consultations within the alliance over Russia's attack on Ukraine.  According to the NATO website, consultation under Article 4 can lead to collective action among the 30 member states. It has been invoked 6 times since the NATO alliance formed in 1949.

What we are seeing, I believe is a global power shift towards Russia and China which are in ascendancy while the US and UK empires are really dying. This is demonstrated by Russia taking such decisive action at this stage.

How would you describe the western media handling of the current events?

They do what they are paid to do which is to manufacture consent for war and to criminalise any nation or leader that challenges US Coalition hegemony. The western media is nothing more than an extension of national security and intelligence agencies, there is no such thing as “free” press in the West. Of course they are obfuscating the complex reasons for the Russian recognition of the Peoples Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. As they disappeared the Syrian victims of the US terrorist war waged against the Syria since 2011, they are also erasing the victims of the Ukrainian neo-Nazi regime.

In your opinion how is the region influenced by the events, especially for us living in Syria?

The first sign of how the region will be influenced is that Israel has attacked Syria three times in one week and the most recent attack last night which resulted in the death of three Syrian Arab Army soldiers and coincided with the start of Russian aggression against NATO aligned elements in Ukraine. Ukraine is a crucial element of the Israeli tech industry, as many tech companies in Israel outsource their work to the Eastern European nation. But beyond that the collaboration between Ukrainian and Israeli military and intelligence agencies is well documented. Israel was instrumental in the regime change operations of 2014 even commanding Ukrainian militants and taking part in rallies. Israeli money sponsored the regime change. Israel has significant political influence in Ukraine. “Ukraine is a den of Russophobic Israelis” whose purpose is to limit Russia’s sphere of influence.

Ukraine has been used as a blackmail by the US to pressure Russia in Syria and to a lesser extent in Yemen. Now that bargaining chip is lost - this may lead to greater belligerence on the part of Russia and the Resistance axis towards the US occupation and sponsorship of terrorism inside Syria.

President Assad has talked about the building of economic partnerships with Donetsk and Lugansk - this must take into account the rich mineral, oil and coal deposits in the Donbass region and in Ukraine as a whole.

Russia is expanding their military hardware and presence in Syria (bringing landing ships to Tartous ready to despatch to the Black Sea) so while the US was very probably trying to force Russia to leave Syria to protect the Russian speaking Ukrainians the plan has backfired and Russia’s answer was to increase their military footprint in Syria and for the Minister of Defence, Shoigu to hold a meeting with President Assad on mutual cooperation followed by the visit of Faisal Miqdad to Moscow on the day that Putin took the decision to recognise the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk

Syria is the centre of three wars - Russia/Ukraine, China and US and Iran/Hezbollah and Israel.

The economic sanctions is the style and slogan of the West, how do you view this procedure? How does this procedure affect the targeted countries?

US sanctions began against Syria in 1979, increased in 2004 based on Syria being an extraordinary threat ie supporting enemies of US and Israel - Iran, Hezbollah, Palestinian resistance designated “terrorists” in the US/UK allied playbook. Sanctions are a weapon of mass destruction designed to unilaterally punish the population of a sovereign nation that is denying the US Coalition its agenda in the target region. They are never confined to individuals or named institutions but are always used against the people of a country to coerce them to accept and comply with US foreign policy. In reality by necessity sanctions actually strengthen perceived enemy nations such as Iran and Russia.

The act of withholding means of sustaining life to innocent civilians in order to coerce an entire nation into submission to foreign agendas in the region must surely qualify as economic terrorism. The destruction of essential civilian infrastructure is a war crime, the withholding of essential resources or occupation of those resources is also a war crime. One could argue that the US Coalition is responsible for genocide in Syria under Genocide Convention article II (e) - deliberately inflicting on the group, conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part”.

This brings me to the use of the word “genocide’ in Russian discourse, even from President Putin - this represents a huge threat to the West because they know Russia is capable of carrying through at the highest level - prosecution of countries involved in genocide which could include the US/UK-led alliance in Libya, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Yugoslavia etc

Britain and USA are at the peak of fear and hostility towards Russia, do you understand these concerns?

Declining influence and supremacy. The birth of the Resistance axis very much facilitated by the war against Syria which has given a foothold to Russia, Iran and even China in the region - the very thing that the US and UK were so keen to prevent. Russiaphobia has been the driving force behind more than 75 years of CIA and MI6 intervention in Syria including prior engineered “uprisings” most notably in the late 70s/early 80s. As Peter Ford, former UK ambassador to Syria has said UK foreign policy towards Syria is now nothing more than a vindictive one embittered by the strength of the Russo/Syrian alliance and formerly the Soviet Syrian alliance. Russia is defending global security and international law which the UK and US are systemically violating. Russia is recognised as an honest broker on the international stage while the US and UK are increasingly seen as ignorant, thuggish and dishonest.

Explaining the reasons and consequences of Russia attacking military centers in Ukraine.

Destroying NATO military capability . Precision strikes. The consequences are the demoralisation of Ukrainian armed forces, many are reported to have surrendered and Russia is offering Amnesty if they lay down their weapons.

As the former head of the neo-Nazi Right Sector in Odessa, Sternenko was directly implicated in the 2014 Trade Unions House massacre of 46 people. He is a convicted criminal and currently under investigation for murder.

According to Israeli Media Kann News, Ukrainian President Zelensky asked from Israeli Prime-Minister Bennet to mediate between Ukraine and Russia, in the middle of the battle of Kyiv/Kiev.

A potted history of US allied sanctions against Syria

1979 -
US put Syria on the list of “State sponsors of terrorism

Support for Iran, Hezbollah, Palestinian Resistance characterised as Hamas. The following analysis is taken from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) paper on Syrian sanctions. CFR is at the top of the influence pyramid as regards US regime foreign policy.

Syria gives the Lebanese militia Hezbollah political, diplomatic, and organizational aid, according to the State Department. Iranian arms bound for Hezbollah regularly pass through Syria, experts say. Syria, which effectively occupied and controlled neighboring Lebanon from 1990 to 2005, also let Hezbollah operate in Lebanon and attack Israel, often ratcheting up regional tensions.

Syria has also provided training, weapons, safe haven, and logistical support to both
leftist and Islamist Palestinian hard-liners. Syria allows several regional terrorist organizations—such as Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command—to have external headquarters in Damascus, according to the State Department. The Syrian government contends that these headquarters are for political and informational mobility only and that these groups “represent legitimate resistance activity as distinguished from terrorism”

Leftist can be translated as communist, the West’s bete noir which then included Soviet Union, now Russia.

From 1980 until 1998, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which sought an independent Kurdish state, used Syria as a headquarters and base of operations against neighboring Turkey.

The same Kurdish separatist groups now weaponised by the US Coalition against the Syrian government - occupying the north-east, sponsored by the US and Israel, stealing resources, ethnically cleansing the region of Arab Syrians and pillaging wheat and other crops while imprinting Kurdish culture on the area including education.

Syria further alienates itself from US neocolonialist policy by supporting the Iranian Revolution. The revolution overthrew the CIA imposed Shah of Iran who had been CIA-assisted to topple the government of Mohammed Mosaddeq, a hardline nationalist who had campaigned against British oil companies in Iran, threatening to nationalise Iranian resources.

March - August 2004

Syria is labelled “an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and the economy of the United States”. by President Bush – Severe sanctions were imposed on Syria on the pretext that Damascus was ‘supporting terrorism’ which included the biggest perceived threat to Israel in the region, Palestinian armed resistance and Hezbollah.

In reality the sanctions were punishment for Syria’s opposition to Bush’s Iraq policy and to attempt to bring Assad to the table to discuss weakening his alliance with Iran and Hezbollah.

“First Gulf War – Iraq’s ruler Saddam Hussein was recognised by Hafez Al Assad as a collaborator with the US in the devastating and protracted war with Iran, using chemical weapons approved by the US, and as an opportunistic backer of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood.

Hafez Al Assad supported the expulsion of Iraq from Kuwait, in line with International Law, in the First Gulf War but both Syria and Iran later opposed the 2003 US invasion of Iraq even though it would effectively rid them of a mutual enemy, Saddam Hussein.”

The focus on Iraq is significant. The US occupation is not confronting armies of “foreign fighters” but a popular uprising with widespread support. Desperate to stem the opposition, Washington is seeking assistance, willing or coerced, wherever it can be obtained. The US message to Damascus is that it should cut off any sources of aid to the Iraqi resistance and use its political influence to bolster the illegal US-led occupation.
WSWS

As further justification, Bush cited longstanding US demands, made largely on Israel’s behalf, that Syria pull out of the Lebanon and crack down on Palestinian “terrorist” organisations based in Damascus. Syria pulled out of Lebanon in 2005 after the assassination of Rafiq Hariri which was conveniently blamed on Syria and Hezbollah but is believed to have been engineered by Israeli intelligence, Mossad.

Bush insisted that Syria has “one of the most advanced Arab state chemical weapons capabilities” and “continues to develop an offensive biological weapons capability”. Not a shred of evidence has been provided to back these claims, which Syria has consistently denied. However this “chemical weapon” narrative has underpinned the Washington-London-Gulf State-Israeli-EU regime change intervention that has been ongoing since 2011. Of course, parallels to the WMD faux justification for the invasion of Iraq must be drawn.

Those sanctions did not include any restriction on future investments by US energy companies.

Preceded in 2003 by the pre-planned invasion of Iraq on “war on terror” pretext and Israel launched the first missile attack on Syria for thirty years. President Bush immediately condoned the attack.

A memo from Blair to Bush discussed creating a ‘post-cold-war world order’. These memos were revealed by the Chilcot report into the WMD hoax that manufactured consent for the criminal invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Blair mentions Syria, Libya and Iran in the context of ‘anti-terrorism’ and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). These countries should be given a ‘choice’:

“co-operate on WMD or face isolation and in time, worse.”

2011 onwards, the doubling down of sanctions pressure

From May 2011 the EU, US and UK adopted successive sanctions against Syria in line with their interventionist policy using terrorist groups as proxies to overthrow the Syrian government. Early on, embargoes were placed on the oil sector, freezing the assets of individuals and the Syrian state. Before 2011 oil represented 20% of Syrian GDP.  Export and import were targeted and shut down from the US including the medical sector which has always been denied by the US alliance.

November 2011, the Arab League joined the US alliance of economic warfare, freezing Syrian government financial assets, ending financial exchanges with the Central Bank of Syria and the ban on flights between the countries of the Arab League, cessation of investment in Syria by Arab League states (opposed by Lebanon and Yemen). Turkey also announced the freezing of Syrian state financial assets.

Canada, Australia and Switzerland have also contributed to the economic pressure on Syria. Canada prohibited all imports of goods from Syria and the export of “luxury goods” to Syria - cracked down on financial services related to Syria and banned any investment in the country.

In February 2012 the EU imposed sanctions on the energy sector, the supply of arms (while supplying arms to Al Qaeda), the financial sectors and mining sectors. 120 Syrian officials and institutions had financial assets frozen by the EU and travel to the EU was prohibited. Other sectors adversely affected were law enforcement, telecommunications.

The alleged chemical weapon use by the Syrian government has also been exploited to increase the savagery of economic sanctions (despite vetoes from China and Russia) culminating in the Trump administration-led Caeser act which ostensibly targets named individuals with connections to the Syrian leadership. All sanctions deployed by the US coalition as a precursor or accompaniment for war unilaterally target the populations of prey nations disguised by the flimsy fig leaf of prosecuting individuals that the US has deemed criminal without independent trial or investigation.

Sanctions kill slowly and painfully, silently. The impact of mortars blasting holes in the roads, homes and tearing limbs from bodies, murdering and maiming are preferable because at least the Syrian people had a life to defend, to sacrifice for. Now, they are being starved of food and hope, left in a mire of poverty, hunger, darkness, cold  and abandoned to their fate by a world no longer interested in Syria because the media has switched off and pivoted towards Ukraine or Covid.

The Real Noam Chomsky

This will not be a popular post, simply because of the cult of personality of mythical dimensions built around the figure of Professor Noam Chomsky, regardless, I am posting at the insistence of a friend of mine who encouraged me to publish my critiques highlighting some of the most problematic inconsistencies of Chomksy that ironically enough, have served to “manufacture consent” for the corrupt and criminal establishment that he claims to oppose.
I admit it, for years I admired Professor Chomsky’s work, in spite of his tedious monotone, he comes across as most clever and articulate, yet there is much more to this controversial character that many of his loyal followers perceive as a guru or cult figure and his critics as a faux progressive or a gatekeeper at best and a collaborator at worst.
Here are some of the inconsistencies that I have observed (and documented) during the last few years:
• In spite of the occasional criticism towards Israeli leadership, Chomsky ultimately supports the existence of the belligerent apartheid state of Israel.
• Chomsky opposes the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement, a global non-violent campaign that uses economic and political pressure on Israel to end of Israeli occupation and colonization of Palestinian land, full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, respect for the right of return of Palestinian refugees and recognize the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination.
• Chomsky was a propagandist of the US/NATO aggression against the former Yugoslav Federation, enabling the criminal policy that broke the Yugoslav Federation into six unstable, impoverished micro-states after carrying out a 78-day bombing campaign in which US/NATO dropped over 3,000 bombs killing thousands of civilians.
• Chomsky said that the Western military intervention was the only way to prevent genocide in Libya, advocated for the 'no fly zone' and subsequent destruction of Libya. Every word he uttered turned out to be completely false. The allegations of abuses by the Libyan government were total war propaganda fabrications and look what happened to Libya, once the most prosperous nation in the African continent under Qaddafi who offered, public housing, free healthcare, free education, and many other public benefits to Libyans is now a failed state, a territory disputed by al-Qaeda, Daesh and other Wahhabi takfiri groups rival groups, where organ trafficking is prevalent, where, thousands of refugees drowning in the Mediterranean after paying human traffickers to take them to Europe in tiny, overloaded boats, where sub-Saharan Africans are openly sold as slaves for as little as $200 and where human life is worth not more than infected yeast.
What is Chomsky saying about Libya these days? Has he assumed any responsibility for his role in manufacturing consent? No, not at all, Professor Chomsky remains invested in openly advocating for regime change in Syria.
• Chomsky routinely parrots the corporate media lines by referring to Bashar Al Assad an autocrat who needs to be forcibly removed and seems to justify with the continuous bombing of the great Syrian nation to achieve regime change. As of today, he remains a strong advocate for the U.S. occupation forces to remain illegally occupying Syrian territory.
• Chomsky supported the U.S. led coup in Ukraine which successfully installed Europe's first Nazi government since Adolph Hitler and his Third Reich.
• Chomsky acknowledges the one-party corporate oligarchy, and then urges everyone to vote for the “lesser evil”. He did in 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, He publicly supported the candidacy of war criminals, Barak Obama in 2008, Hillary Clinton “Butcher of Libya, Syria and Honduras” in 2016 and Crime Bill’s author, Joe Biden in 2020 just to maintain the status quo and hence a system of injustice that he claims to oppose.
• Chomsky is perfectly kosher with W Bush government's official narrative of 9/11 - he went as far as to say, "who cares?" about who might be the real culprits of this historical event.
• Chomsky was academically formed by and works for MIT, an elitist university with close ties with the Military Industrial Complex and the CIA.
• Chomsky defines himself as an "anarcho-syndicalist" yet he defends the existence of the Federal Reserve - while Chomsky bemoans the widespread poverty in America and the Third World, he has never spoken publicly on the role of the Federal Reserve. Therefore, most leftist activists influenced by Chomsky remain unaware of the role played by this privately owned banking cartel which basically prints worthless flat currency out of thin air.
• Chomsky opposes the Right of Return of the Palestinian diaspora - which in essence is opposing international law, since the Right of Return is an inalienable and basic human right.
• These days, Chomsky has turned full-blown fascist as he called for the isolation of the unvaccinated from society even if that means their starvation. Chomsky’s most inflammatory comment came when he was asked how this isolated class he is proposing would receive food. He remarked that this was a problem for the unvaccinated. The solution then, according to Chomsky, is to appeal to moral capacity and then claim that those who do not understand should live in an isolated existence with food uncertainty.
Please keep in mind that in his authoritarian views, Chomsky is oblivious to clinical data that shows that Covid vaccines do not prevent neither infection nor transmission, in fact, early data shows that the variant, Omicron is infecting those who are "fully vaccinated" at a much higher rate than the unvaccinated and American authorities also revealed the 79% of the country's infection cases were vaccinated.
• In addition, Chomsky belittles the importance of Medicare for All in the midst of a global pandemic and cynically refers to it as “candy” to be pursued, but never achieved.
In essence, Chomsky has made a career talking from both sides of his mouth while perfecting the art of manufacturing consent.
Chomsky talks like an anarchist during off years, then tucks tail and comes slinking back to the establishment during election years - that is why many refer to him as "controlled opposition" or "left gatekeeper", this is why I have no use for Chomsky, and why it baffles me when people speak of him in tones of reverence and awe.
