Over the years, the Bogosity Podcast has followed—and championed—the gift to the world known as Sci-Hub.
Sci-Hub makes available well over 90% of the world's published science to everyone for free with a simple search, and has been championed by scientists who link to their own work on Sci-Hub, and who use Sci-Hub DOI links as citations in their own research.
For many of them, it's indispensable.
But the big publishing houses have called it "the Pirate Bay of science."
Elsevier, Springer Nature, and others complain that it's stealing from the very people who produce science.
But... scientists don't get paid anything to submit to journals. Referees don't get paid for their peer-reviewing. And many editors don't get paid, either.
And much of it is taxpayer-funded to boot!
So, the big publishers get all of this content for free, and then jack up prices they charge to universities and research centers—raking in some $30 billion a year worldwide!
Hear how judges exceed their authority and make up fictitious laws to enforce rulings against people and organizations who weren't even a party to the case.
Hear how universities turned to Sci-Hub when Elsevier made it impossible for them to afford the journals.
Hear how the City of London Police even got involved in enforcing their edicts!
And hear how it all was used to oppress the Russian people by denying them access to scientific knowledge—leaving their only source of scientific information as Russian government propaganda.
