2022 Costume Project Announcement

I always have way too many ideas and not enough time to execute them. That's life for a costumer. I recently found a book of my ideas with lists from years ago. I had forgotten about most of them. But it reminded me I need to focus on the thing that need made. I don't just make for myself any more, but also for my husband and kids and I don't get nearly the hours in the day!

We're getting an earlier start this year for the Fall than we usually do. With that in mind, here is the current list of Builds for this year.
  1.  Assassin's Creed Black Flag for Logan. He has wanted this costume for about five years. I'm finally getting around to it now. He's 16 now and pretty tall. Still growing but not so fast that I can't keep up any more. The plan is for him to help build his props and weapons. I'll make this from the under layers up. There is a LOT of detail and stitching on this one, plus some leather work. I started the research on layers and fabrics in January 2022.
  2.  Fawkes the Phoenix Original Design for Inara. I've been asking her if I could design and make this one for her for going on five years now. She's finally agreed! I've been researching inspiration photos and ideas since February now. I need to sit down and just sketch to come up with a concept. Then we can fabric shop. She definitely wants it in dress form and I don't blame her. There will be some sort of headdress and also wings of course.
  3.  Classic Han Solo for Tim. I've actually been working on this one for years now. It keeps getting set aside because "life". But now it's time to just get it done. I have the blue pants and need to sew the blood stripes down the sides. That's hand sewing because of the placement. I need to figure out if I'm going to make the shirt and vest or just purchase them. The boots need found and I'll need to commission someone to make the leather holster. He can borrow my resin copy of the blaster.
  4.  Ceremonial Leia from original Star Wars: This is a remake. Way back in 2005 I made this but rushed it and it wasn't that great. This time I'm going to take my time collecting materials and will probably draft the pattern myself. I also have my eye on an original necklace from the Swedish jewelry designer. This build will go into 2023. I have a weight loss goal that must be met before I cut a single inch of fabric.

Belle's Live Action Gold Dress for Inara - 2021 Build, Part II

Still a freebie because it's part of a series and the build is from last year.

Silk Satin Faced Organza in yellow, gold polyester satin, gold net.  The bodice is multi layered. Because the fabrics are slippery, each type of fabric was cut one piece at a time in a single layer. Fabric clips help. I also used a rotary cutter on a mat. This make my cuts more precise and frankly, it's easier than scissors. I stacked each piece in their respective layers - gold satin face up, then silk organza on top, then net overlay on top of that, and clipped them together. I treated them as one layer from then on.  Lining is not shown. Proper technique would have been to hand baste them together, but if you are confident you can just clip them. If the pieces were larger and I needed more precise fit I would have taken the time to baste. But with kid's things, because they are smaller, you can get away with some stuff. Also note, I only had the net overlay on the main bodice and NOT the stomacher. The whole stomacher is going to be covered with bias painted strips and no one will see the under part. But you could have it if you wanted.

I pinned and sewed the darts in the backs and fronts, then sewed the stomacher to the two front pieces. Pressing is integral so all seam allowances were pressed open using a pressing cloth.  I left the back off for now because of the amount of stitching needed on the stomacher with the bias strips. It makes life easier if you have less fabric to manage around your sewing machine.

Next up: Cutting and painting bias strips for the bodice....

Building Han for my husband started a decade ago but got sidelined when we had our youngest. Back to it now. Have a lot of the parts, pieces and fabrics. About to embark on this new build for him so he can wear when I costume Leia! Going to order the boots custom along with the holster. The rest I'll make!

Wow! Lots going on! A remake I'm about to embark on - Ceremonial Leia from A New Hope. With new details on the original costume having come to light in the last five years it's time especially b/c the one I have in storage is over 16 years old!! So I'm about to re-build the whole costume - dress, belt, shoes, hair, jewelry. Stay tuned here for fabric and materials collection updates, pattern drafts and logs about the hunt for just the right shoes!!

I would like to reach $500 per month. This will allow me to purchase professional level sewing studio furniture, and also some equipment and supplies I need to replace. A portion will go into an account for Phase II of the studio renovation including a work sink and new counter in the alcove, plus Phase II - the studio bathroom renovation including floor and shower stall repair.
