Most Canadians are quite aware of the crimes committed against indigenous people by the Catholic, United and Anglican Churches, sanctioned by the British and Canadian Governments. I was informed as a teen in 1960's while the residential schools were still functioning. I have indigenous friends who told me how terrified they were as children when the child services came to take them away from their families to put them in a residential school many never to return. Many documentary films and books discussing the crimes and injustices are available. Between 2007 and 2015 the Truth and Reconciliation Committee interviewed over 6500 indigenous people and some monetary compensations were made. There was an overwhelming amount of horrifying revelations during these years and were highly publicized. Since that time there has been more awareness, education and opportunities available however many Canadians, individual and systemic, stubbornly remain hateful and racist towards indigenous people. Their lands are exploited by natural resource corporations, they are overrepresented in prisons and the sick and troubled are sometimes mistreated by hospitals and police. The women are often targeted by sexual predators with little help from the justice system. The whole thing stinks.
