Giorgio Vasari used the term "barbarous German style" in his 1550 Lives of the Artists to describe it.

To me English Gothic cathedrals are the perfect architectural expression of the Northern soul. They remind me of forests and trees. In this video tribute to the burned Notre Dame cathedral, I show the beauty of four English cathedrals; York Minster, Wells cathedral, Exeter cathedral, and Winchester cathedral. All of them are medieval structures which took centuries to build. All of the quotes in the video come from the famous art critic, John Ruskin, who loved Gothic architecture and promoted its revival in the 19th century.
