The culture of raiding warrior bands, known as a 'here' in Old English, was common to many Indo-European cultures and was also associated with the religion. In Rome it became the lupercalia, among Germanic folk it became the wild hunt and was associated with the berserkers and the einherjar of Lord Odin, while in India it is associated with the Gandharvas and, according to whom you ask, the Varuna side of Mitra-Varuna or the Rudra side of Shiva-Rudra.

I will discuss this a bit in relation to Dumezil and Kershaw's theories. (Mitra-Varuna and The One-Eyed God from the journal of Indo-European studies Monograph no.36 respectively)
