Venerable Sadhu If one would ordain as a bhikkhu, would there be any personal items that may be retained in the renunciate life? I know the expectation is that you surrender everything you own and disconnect from social status/obligations and so on, but would one be able to keep items such as a manicure set (for good nail hygiene), non Buddhist books, a backpack etc?
Yes it is allowable for someone being ordained to keep certain things that he owns. So long as they are suitable for a monk to use. Nail clippers are fine although I'm not sure exactly what a manicure set includes.
