Capricho Arabe by Francisco Tárrega
A while ago I posted a recording of me playing Capricho Arabe by Francisco Tárrega over at Patreon. In this video I played along with that recording trying to match what I did. The reason I did this is because this is a very difficult piece to begin with and getting a good recording with the video camera running is not possible since I haven't played this piece at all for a couple of months. I have a student learning Capricho Arabe and he needs a recording to listen to.
You will see that this video has freeze frames throughout. It's not your computer freezing, or a problem with the upload, or with my video editor, I actually did this on purpose. My wife thinks this is weird. I thought it was cool. I'm just trying something new here. I'll make guitar lesson videos about this piece later and then you will see the intricacies of the piece if you are interested. This video is designed to have the recording out there for people to listen to, not to show them how to play the piece.
Capricho Arabe is in Drop D tuning.
I was introduced to this piece by a student when I was teaching at a drug rehab in Saint George, Utah, back in 2005. I taught there from 2000 to 2012. This particular student was a recovering addict.
He had been working on this piece and was about half way finished with it when his drug habit engulfed his life and almost killed him. I had to learn this piece to teach it to him so that he could finish it. This gave him focus and something to think about instead of the pain of getting over his drug habit.
Capricho Arabe is a level 9 piece on a scale of 1 to 10. It is not a beginner piece by any means although anyone could learn parts of it and begin their journey. I've never been able to get a student past measure 25, or about 2 minutes 15 seconds into the piece, without them having a solid foundation to work on.
This means
  • good fingerpicking technique
  • the ability to play barre chords
  • and the ability to stretch a bit with the left hand.
