Merry Christmas, everyone!

This year has been difficult in different ways for different people, and as I look back on my own experience, I feel as though I have been in mourning for a good part of it. With the death of Ravi Zacharias in March, and then the COVID-19 closings and restrictions, things seemed to snowball from there (and I am not even counting the Disney Star Wars trilogy before that.) I've had a few fallings-out with some people I used to trust much more, and I have struggled to let go of their influence on my life.

But there are definite points of light that shine as I look back, too.

My family and I were able to pay down some debt once we cut back thanks to COVID, I lost about 10 pounds (I don't tend to gain or lose weight unless I really, really try hard, and I've had my baby weight for about 7 years now, LOL), and I have settled into a good routine for the business side of writing, despite some of the mixed results. I did sell about 300 more books than I did last year, and I am praying those books will touch people's lives in a positive way. I did get some notes from new readers this year that touched my heart like that. My charity, my Giving Back Initiative, was able to give out over $600 worth of grant money to college graduates with student loan debt. I am very happy about that one, since I know what it feels like to see only a mountain of bills and being forced to be stuck in a job that sucks out your soul and devours it like a demon. And of course, despite all things, I was able to get out "Legend of Eydis," the first third of "Fatgirl" and its serial works, the Once Upon a Princess Saga's box set, and "Dragon Tears," among other things. I was able to work on recording some of my own audio books, too.

All in all, I think that this year has really been a year of contrast. I actually like contrast in my novels, since it heightens the important things. And I think that's what has become really clear throughout this year -- what is most important, and how some of the things I conflate with "important" are not really that important. I know I will have to remember that as we move into 2021.

For now, I'm more than happy to wish you all the best, the greatest "Merry Christmas" you'll get this year, and please know I am praying for your blessing and safety as you spend time (perhaps virtually) with your family and friends. I'll be sure to check in some more in a few days, as New Year's comes closer! Hopefully I will have more updates on #Kingdom3's progress by then!

All the best,

CJ

ONCE UPON A TIME ...

Once upon a time, there was a princess who wasn't really a princess, but thought she was a princess, and sometimes that's just as good as the real thing, especially if one lives in a world of one's own. And that's more or less how it worked. She lived in a world of her own, and it was good - certainly better than the rest of the real world. The real world passed her by, at best allowing her to float above the flotsam and at worst dragged her through the drudgery, largely apathetic to her joys and dismissive of her sorrows.
That princess was me.
A great thing about living in a fantasy world of one's own is that it really makes reality seem more malleable. When I was teased by someone, I could imagine them getting eaten by my imaginary dragon or I could have them breaking out in boils (I still do this, by the way - saves me millions on therapy and bail money, I'm sure). When I was complimented, I could plaster the news all around the billboards of my fantasyland.
But the most important thing about life I've learned while living in a fantasy world is something that doesn't have to do with fantasy at all.
The fantastical and the imaginary and the moveable, even the things of the most potent and most gripping narrative, can do nothing against the permanent things.
Not a hard leap for me to see why T. S. Eliot would become my favorite poet later on.
The first permanent "thing" I met? God.
I first heard about God at church, but I first met God in a story.
Since then, God and stories have wound their way into my heart and settled there. Given my love of stories, some people might be surprised to learn that I am the most surprised person to realize that I write stories, and that I write books for a living.
So, I write stories.

I'M A WRITER

I write books that are young adult reads (my favorite), mostly fantasy (among my favorites), some sci-fi (because I like a challenge), and some that just need to be written, despite the different genres and styles and voices.
Through what I do and see and think and feel and make fun of, I want to show you how God works in mysterious and miraculous ways - both for our good and for his glory.
So, that's my story.
I'm hoping the ending is even better than I hope it is.

BACKSTORY

Backstory matters to writers. I do believe that what happens in our lives can change us in unexpected ways. So, here's a little backstory on me.
I grew up in Western PA, and I still call it home. I have a tightly knit family, and we are pretty close even when we are all spread around America. I love America - and it's a good thing, too. When I go visit my family, I have to travel through at least six states to get where I need to be. I still love to travel, and I want to make sure I do it as often as I can.
As for education, it's one of my most ardent beliefs that people should be educated - whether in school or on the job, I encourage lifelong learning, analysis (if not over-analysis), critical/creative thinking, and self-reflection. I have my bachelor's in Secondary English education (certified teacher) from Toccoa Falls College, and my master's in English and Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University.
Other jobs I've had range from bad to worse to decent. I taught middle school, high school, and college level for a while, teaching for eight years total before taking some time off to raise my kids and enjoy my writing full-time, among my other writing-related activities.

OTHER PURSUITS

I'm a person that believes the more you try to do, the less you will get done. In theory, it's great. It's harder in practice.
So, my typical life doesn't change much. Faith and family come first. I try to sleep well, eat well, exercise at least an hour everyday, generally take care of myself stuff. I had to give up caffeine (doctor's orders) and I've struggled with anxiety and depression, so I admire people who go through mental disorders. I go to a great church and I check in on my friends. I love reading mostly philosophy and apologetics, but I like random other stuff, too. I have some favorite podcasts and cultural commentators I like to listen to. Other than that, I try to be a better person. It doesn't always work out well. I want to start my own business for writers and charity for student loan fundraising one day, so I need my writing to make me rich and famous so I can fund it.

PERSONAL INFO

I don't share a lot of personal things, but I currently live near Atlanta, so you just might see me out and about around there from time to time. Not that you would be likely to recognize me. I'm a wife and mother, so the high bun and hoodie look is a great disguise.

I'VE DECIDED TO CANCEL #OBAB THIS YEAR

Hi everyone!

As you can tell from the title, I have decided to cancel #OBAB this year. I am chalking some of it up to 2020's fluke, but I am struggling to write and juggle a few other things that I have going on at the moment. I love what I have, and I'd like to see it progress into something more, and I'll need more time with it to do that. I am hoping to have it out for next Halloween!

I am terribly sorry for this, and I do actually feel really bad about it. I don't like quitting things, and I am actually known for some of my more irrational stubbornness at times. But I'm also tired, and the anemia diagnosis a couple of weeks ago was only part of it, I'm afraid.

On the bright side of this, that means I have more time to work on Kingdom3, which I know A LOT of you are excited for.

In addition to the third book in the series, I will have another companion novella centered around Ben (because we love Ben!) and they will be out in early 2021, too.

And in addition to that, I have begun the process of hiring a narrator for the audio book! I am hoping things will work out in that regard and I will have some new audio books as well as books to give to you soon!

In the meantime, please pray, send some good vibes, and keep the positive energy up for me and my family. In addition to the weird year, we are working on some changes for next year that are kind of bigger (husband is transitioning to a new position in January), and the kids are just growing up some! It's so strange to me to see them as not-my-babies, lol  ). My health is a little better this month, too, but I will have to follow up and blood work next month.

As always, I am so grateful for your support and love and care, and I am greatly indebted to you for your kindness.  You truly do make my world brighter! Thank you for being my supporters through all of this!

Please feel free to email me at [email protected] at any time and I will do my best to get back to you!

All the best,

CJ

Dragon Tears is Out in the Mail! + Other Updates!

Hi everyone!

I hope you've had a good October! It's been very crazy from what I've seen, but we've had some good parts here and there, and I apologize for not moving faster to get your books out! But they are out in the mail now, and you should see them pop up soon, hopefully! I know the PO lady warned me the mail might be a bit delayed because of election vote reasons, but if you haven't gotten them in a week or so please let me know and I will send out a replacement.

I hope you will enjoy the pictures that my kids drew on the packages, too! Phobos (my daughter) and Deimos (my son) are both very happy to help me mail out things since I will usually let them draw on the packages. My babies are so sweet!

Some other updates:

OBAB

#OBAB, my sweet zombie and vampire romance novel, has been delayed to the end of next month now (Nov. 30th). I have to laugh a little at this one, because the reason I have been so slow on it is because I have been really, really tired lately. I have been waiting for winter all summer, so it was very strange to be sleeping 13+ hours a day or slugging through just sitting around and not wanting to do things. It turns out I have been suffering from a bout of anemia! Just like my vampire character, technically, lol. 😂 I enjoy a good laugh at myself, and God knows I enjoy the irony of the situation. I have switched out my diet and taken some supplements so I am feeling better this week, but I will see what the medical professionals say next month. Prayers are appreciated!

AUDIO BOOKS!

Also, Andrea and Scott are finished up with Space Pirates 3's audio book, so that will be coming soon, as well as the entire series collection. I am waiting on ACX to finalize the audio and then it'll be sent out to Audible, iTunes, and Amazon. So exciting! Andrea and Scott both did a great job, and that is on top of having a baby since they started!

I do have some codes for Book 1 (just 2 US codes, and plenty of UK ones) and several for Book 2 (both US and UK) if you'd like to listen and catch up! Just send me an email at [email protected] and I'll be happy to send them (first come, first served).

Once I'm finished with OBAB and its off to the editor all the way, I'll working on my Dragon Tears audio book. I'm narrating it myself, and I'm still working on getting a practiced method for all of it.

GIVING BACK GRANT!

November marks the 6th month of my Giving Back Grant Initiative! So far, a grand total of approximately $308 has been given out to college grads who are repaying their student loans. Thank you for helping me assist in my philanthropy! I'm hoping to give more out in the future.

That's all I have for now! I hope you all are having a good year despite all the trouble, and that you'll be able to end it on a high note!

All the best,

CJ

Good morning, everyone!

I have some good news to share today!

The hardbacks for "Dragon Tears" are ready to go! Now that I have approved them, I have ordered them for my monthly supporters, and I will sign them and send them out to you in the coming weeks!

I do apologize for the delay with this one, and I am hoping the audio book will be next!

OTHER UPDATES:

In addition to working on my audio books (I swear I am getting better, but slower everytime I work on it), I'm working on Of Blood and Brains still. It's been going a little slower, since the school year has started, and a lot of our extra-curricular activities have resumed as well. We are still being Corona-safe, but we are running around a lot more around my house -- and also this means my house gets messier, for some reason, and I literally have to take a whole day off to clean it! (I am a slow cleaner).

Once OBAB is finished, it'll be on to finish #Kingdom3 and it's second companion novella, and that should wrap up my 2020 release schedule (I will try really really hard not to have to push dates back -- but quality first!).

ALSO: If you haven't seen it, my anthology collection with several other fantasy and sci-fi authors has come out, and it will only be available for a limited time!

I hope you'll check it out and get the full stories of my "Omelas Revisited" short novella series, as well as 20 other works from talented authors!

Please check it out here:

That's all for now!

Thanks for being one of my readers!

All the best,

CJ

Hi everyone!

Hope you're up for a #sneakpeeksnippet of my newest book! Here's a sneak peek of "Dragon Tears," a christian fantasy novella and part of my series, "The Alliance of the Dragon Sword."

Blurb first:

Snippet second: ^_^

“Ooh, Thessa, remember last time the Arians came? They brought us spools of fine cloth and those lovely shoes,” Philia gushed. “And that jewelry, too!”

“You know Ghosts like us aren’t supposed to draw attention to ourselves,” I reminded her. “Why get so excited?”

“I’m more excited for you,” Philia said. “Your Adoption Day is today. Surely, you’ll get your marriage arranged, and as a bride, you can be as extravagant as you’d like.”

As we made our way down to the port, Philia continued to babble, filling my head with even more daydreams and ideas. I couldn’t help but allow her ideas to whisk my imagination away into another world, and even the sight of the Arian ship tying off into port couldn’t fully bring me back to attention.

“Philia, Thessa, over here!”

Over the gathering crowds, I heard Davar calling out to us from the adjacent dock. I could see the dark burgundy of his hair sticking out from his helm. Philia had been right, it seemed; Davar was in his full armor, decked out in his gilded breastplate and the formal, silver-embroidered leather underneath his chainmail.

We made our way over to the adjacent dock as the Arian ship crept closer to shore.

“Where’s Edmun?” I asked as we approached.

“He went to go with some of the other Ghosts,” Davar said. “Father Piet ordered him to get Cathedral City’s best guesthouses ready.”

“So you know who’s coming? What have you heard?” Philia asked Davar as we greeted each other.

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” Davar straightened with pride, clearly enjoying having the upper hand over us; it was a rare occasion. “I’ve heard some of the portkeepers talking about it.”

“Well, tell us, then,” Philia insisted. “Don’t be cruel and make us wait. Is it another concert tour?”

“No, and praise the Creator for that.” Davar stuck out his tongue in light disgust. He had no patience for music, although I had to wonder if that was intentional. Thanks to Philia, who often took to gossiping, we knew that Davar’s father had likely been an Arian singer.

“Word has it that the Arian king has sent his highest-ranking ambassador here, and the ship’s marking proves it,” Davar said. He pointed toward the mast, where a royal purple flag waved in the breeze. “See the silver design on it? That’s the coat of arms for the Rico family.”

“It’s so elegant,” Philia said with a happy sigh. “I wonder what they’ve brought us? Maybe a new flag for Cathedral City’s public square? That would be lovely. Father Dion was just mentioning about seeing to the City’s upgrades.”

“I don’t know,” I said, suddenly noticing the small legion of troops standing on the top deck. “They’ve come with soldiers.”

“Well, I doubt it’s an invasion if you’re worried about that. They wouldn’t be that foolish,” Philia said. “Laena is very self-sufficient, and that’s largely because our troops help protect us.”

Davar grinned. “Of course we do, so you’re welcome.”

“Who says I was talking about you?” Philia teased. “You’re still at a minor rank.”

“Still better than you,” Davar snapped back.

“Well, it’s not my fault that women don’t fight, is it?”

“Women like you are the reason we fight. We protect the rest of the world from having to deal with the likes of you.”

I bit back a sigh as I ignored them. Philia and Davar had always been close, and with each passing year, I often wondered if they fought to prove they weren’t secretly in love. Due to the mysterious nature of their heritage, Ghost Children were not often allowed to marry each other. Ceru would be the one who would have the final say in that matter, but given the odds, I couldn’t blame Philia and Davar for their squabbles. Smaller pains in the present helped to possibly avoid larger ones in the future.

That was part of the reason the Laenites did not encourage some of the courting rituals many of the other countries and nations had, too. From what I knew of other nations’ temporal relationships, divorces, and dating disasters, I was honestly relieved. I wanted a lasting love, a love that I could rely on to strengthen and support me; something I could add to and something that could give back something even more beautiful.

As Davar and Philia continued to tease and taunt each other, I kept my eyes on the approaching ship. It was a grand one, with silk-lined sails and intricate carvings along both sides. The Arians were known for their spectacle as much as their presentation.

I squinted as I saw a solider moving across the ship, headed for the point of the bow.

The sun’s setting light flickered over his helmed brow like a kiss of lightning. I watched, intrigued, as he took out a small flute and began to play.

The trill of the music fluttered down from on high in a lovely wave, making my heart lurch inside my chest.

I had always adored music. Both in my darkest midnights and my bright moments of joy, I would sing songs and find strengthen and sustenance.

I looked for the source of the song, and found myself staring at a man near the maidenhead of the ship.

The flute player held himself upright with confidence and flare, and as I watched him play, I almost wished I’d learned how to play an instrument, too. I was part of the worship choir as a singer, but I was no great talent.

But I decided right then and there that if I ever had the time, I would write Ceru a song that would match my voice with the flute.

“Oh, that’s beautiful.” Philia leaned against my shoulder as she finally took notice of the music.

“Please, he’s not that good,” Davar argued, which sparked another argument with Philia.

I heard another shout from behind the flute player, and the music halted in mid-song.

A breath of stillness and silence took over.

And then, in the blink of an eye, the Arian boat suddenly slammed against the receiving dock.

The dock’s wooden titles snapped. Ropes alternatively tightened and lagged, while several others called out everything from orders to screams of horror.

My eye widened in shock as I watched as the flute player. He wobbled dangerously atop the maidenhead of the ship, and just like before, a long, seemingly endless moment passed as we watched, transfixed by the danger.

And then fate finally gave its verdict.

Philia gasped, and even Davar’s mouth dropped open as the flute player lost his battle with his balance, and he fell forward off the ship.

I closed my eyes as he met the water’s surface in a devastating splash.

Well, let me know what you think! Release date for the ebook is shaping up to be at the end of this month, and I'm working up on finishing and refining the book now. So far we're close to 20K, and I'm fully anticipating it to be around 30 when I'm finished with notes and edits.

This is a #sneakpeeksnippet of my newest book (unedited), Dragon Tears, a companion novella to a new series I'm working on called "The Alliance of the Dragon Sword." This book is a novella that will be exclusive to my supporters on Ko-Fi and Subscribestar.

I know some people will ask me why I am doing this, and most of it is because I am just extremely grateful to my supporters. You guys have carried me throughout some hard times this year and some even since last year when I started doing this, and I am really grateful how it's turned out. And I believe in rewarding that generosity and investment.

The other reason is a little more selfish, perhaps. I want to move away from depending on other platforms to promote my work -- not entirely, but just using it less. Not a lot of people know this, but putting my books up on certain ebook platforms (Amazon, Google Play, B&N, Kobo, etc.) is not free. If you buy a book for $.99 on one of those platforms, I usually get $.35 -- and that's before taxes. The printing platforms also work in similar ways, and with that, there are shipping and handling costs, too. I understand it's part of doing business in a global market, and I do like having access, and I recognize it's good that they can use the income I bring them to update and secure their online systems and pay their own employees, so I am not complaining. I am just saying, in literal and practical terms, that I'd like to see what kind of power my work has to stand on its own.

The book is going to be available online in hardback (I'm hoping to eventually get to audio), but my Ko-Fi and Subscribestar supporters will get a free ebook copy, and if I have enough supporters, I'll even be able to mail out signed copies!
